Another simple solution: let the user stretch the slider, changing the step size. By the way, Florian has a very good point that axes are not always linear.2 -

What I see as the biggest problem is a lack of convenient mechanism for reusing variable settings. No surprise most users stick with instances, who wants to set and maintain the values each time.2 -

Adobe checked variable fonts off the list by giving you the sliders and went playing with iPads.1 -

I’ve never heard anyone complaining about color pickers faking choice by giving 1 px steps which look identical: #0500FE is indistinguishable from #0500FF, but I haven’t seen anyone asking to ban one…2 -
